Experimenting with ISO
Auto ISO on my D3400 is OK for decent lighting, but it has a tendency to go waaaaayyyyy high in soft or low light, leading to some noise. Having learned that lesson the hard way, I'm playing around with ISO manually. This is where I wish I had a dedicated button for ISO settings, but compromises had to be made to get a good entry-level DSLR to market, I guess. Anyway, below are two examples of keeping the ISO relatively low to try and get pictures that were true to what I could see with my own eye. They came out pretty close, to this photographer's eye.

My lovely girlfriend takes TV very seriously. To get softer lighting in the room, we pointed a floor lamp at a corner of the wall. |

Same room, same lighting, and a selfie. Neither of these is filtered or retouched. |
